We’re all familiar with the Paisley pattern, but few know that this fig-shaped design is of Persian (i.e. Iranian) origin. They refer to the motif as Buta.
The western name comes from the town of Paisley, in West Scotland, which is a textile center where paisley designs were produced.
Paisley is still popular in Iran and other Asian countries where it is woven with gold and silver threads onto silk fabric for gifts and weddings. Knowing this made me view our humble paisley stencils a little differently…
