Learn how to stencil gift wrap, it’s fast and easy!

We were inspired by beautiful Pinterest photos of craft paper gift wrap decorated with stamps. So, we set out to get the same look using our stencils. We think we’ve achieved even better results than the stamped projects we saw online!

Stenciling is fast and easy. And, it makes your best efforts look even better. We know that beautiful gift wrapping doesn’t hang around forever. So, it’s a happy little bonus that you didn’t spend hours hand-painting them. Be sure to take photos of your handiwork. Project photos will be a happy little reminder of the beauty you brought into the world. And enjoy the smiles and delight of the lucky recipient on their birthday, Christmas, or other special occasion!

Take a look at the two methods we used to stencil our two gift wrap projects. We used various shades of paint for our 15-minute gift wrap. This featured our Rose Carnation Bouquet Stencil. Our 10-minute gift wrap was created using two shades of green. We used our Sea Turtle Stencil. And we added simple gold accents with a toothpick.

Stenciling Tips

  1. Use painter’s tape to secure the stencil to the craft paper.
  2. After coating your stencil brush in paint, dab until it is nearly dry on a piece of paper towel. Using a nearly dry brush will keep paint from bleeding under the stencil.
  3. Stencil using a “pouncing” motion, up and down. This technique also helps keep paint from bleeding under the stencil. So, you’ll have crisp, clean lines every time you stencil!
  4. Allow the paint to dry before removing the stencil.

 

Some simpler or faster methods for stenciling on gift wrap: Here are some even faster methods for stenciling quickly and easily on gift wrap. These are useful methods when you’re decorating several gifts.

  1. One quick method is to use a single color all over, with a large stencil brush or foam roller. Remember to still dab your brush or roller on a piece of paper towel. This will ensure you don’t bleed paint underneath the stencil. So, you’ll still have crisp lines.
  2. Another quick method is to do a tie-dye effect by using multiple paint colors all over the stencil. Pay less attention to the details of the design and you will speed up your stenciling time.

 

Please note: Stencils are easier to use when they’re clean! So, if you’re using the same stencil on multiple gifts, clean smaller openings with a toothpick. After you’re done using the stencil, soak it in warm soapy water for easier removal of dried-on paint.
